Tyler's Taco Seasoning

Homemade taco seasoning

Have you ever read the ingredients on a package of store bought taco seasoning?

TYPICAL STORE BOUGHT TACO SEASONING INGREDIENTS:
  1. Chili Pepper, Corn Starch, Salt, Onion Powder, Maltodextrin, Spice, Sea Salt (Potassium Magnesium Chloride, Salt). Contains 2% Or Less Of: Vegetable Oil (Canola And/Or Soybean Oil), Corn Flour, Silicon Dioxide (Anticaking Agent), Citric Acid, Sugar, Natural Flavor.
  2. Yellow Corn Flour, Salt, Maltodextrin, Paprika, Spices, Modified Corn Starch, Sugar, Citric Acid, Yeast Extract, Natural Flavors, Silicon Dioxide.
  3. Spices (Including Paprika, Cumin, Oregano, Chili Pepper), Onion, Salt, Lactose (Milk), Sugar, Garlic, Enriched Wheat Flour (Flour, Niacin, Iron, Thiamine Mononitrate, Riboflavin, Folic Acid), Cocoa Powder Processed with Alkali and Natural Flavor.

As you can see these seasonings vary, but they all contain some sort of unnecessary ingredients like gluten, dairy, soy, added sugars, and/or preservatives. Making taco seasoning from scratch in bulk isn't complicated or time consuming, it's actually simple and doesn't take much time at all. Also, a major plus to mixing up your own seasonings is that you won't find any MSGs and you can adjust sodium levels to your needs and liking. I believe that just as we care about what is in our beef and the process it goes through, we should care about the ingredients we add to create our meals too.

1 tsp. cumin
